Monthly Wallpaper theme contest

Postby Mach Sabre on Fri May 23, 2008 3:32 pm

Alright kids, here’s the plan. In July, we reach our one year mark. Now to celebrate, we figured it might be kind of fun to have a monthly calendar wallpaper, featuring pinups of the Mythmaker characters. Sure it might make more sense to do this in January, but we started in July. So cope with it. Now we’ll throw this to you guys and gals. We need a theme for the year. (That’s basically July 08-June 09, barring any apocalypses that might occur.) What should the theme be? Here in this thread, throw some suggestions toward us, and the reasons for it. And in mid June, for a week, we’ll put up a poll with the themes we think is the most fun to do, and the winner of that will be the theme for the year. After that, we’ll put up the wallpaper in the vote incentive in July. (Don’t worry, if you miss it, we’ll make it available.)

The theme suggestion can be anything you guys and gals decide. Now as a couple of examples of themes, here’s what I mean:

Monthly Theme: The obvious one. The characters are depicted in themes correlating with that month. (i.e. Chrissy at Christmas, Deep One Prime on Earth Day, Charon drunk on New Years… Oh, how out of character.)

Swimsuit Theme: The characters depicted in various swimwear outfits. These type of pinups can be anything from sexy to cute to funny to even beautiful. (i.e. Charon sunbathing in a bikini, Lindsey trying to get a wetsuit neck hole over her huge head, Mother Hydra rising from the waters like a leviathan, ect.)

International Theme: The characters depicted in various locations and attire from around the world. These types of pinups can interesting, as well as play up the heritage of the characters. (i.e. Becka in Ireland, Cartaphilius in Italy, Starkweather in Spain. You get the general idea.)

It doesn’t even have to be restricted to the characters established. Hell, we got an RPG starting here soon. People are going to make characters, it could be depictions of the fan created characters canonized in art. Could be the characters cosplaying as other heroes, or re-enactments from famous scenes in movies, or whatever you all suggest. Basically, as long as it’s fun and something that you think the other readers will enjoy seeing. Just make sure whatever you suggest is nothing that’s not safe for work. Basically, we don’t want to get anyone in trouble for looking at it. This includes ourselves. We know what some of you are thinking about Becka and Lindsey.

And just remember… If the theme you wanted doesn’t make it this year… There’s always the next.

So that’s it, if you got questions, ask away. Otherwise, start suggesting.

Movie Theme: i.e. characters dressed up for such greats as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Matrix, Terminator, Psycho, Dracula, Jaws, Evil Dead, Crocodile Dundee, Fantasia, Bonnie & Clyde, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of OZ and 2001: a Space Odyssey.

Civilization theme: i.e. characters dressed up and set in the scenes of civilizations such as the Egyptians, Romans, Feudal Japan, Mongolia, Incas, American Indians, Aboriginal Tribes, Indians, Medieval england, Caveman, Mauri, French (during Nepolianic wars) and Vikings.

Family theme: i.e. groups such as: Susan, Charon and Becka (2yr old); Jackson, Chrissy and Misty; Charon and Becka (naturally), Jackson and his mum; Merri, Phill and Chrissy; Alex and his Parents; Alex and his grandmother; Cartaphilius and his father; The witch coven (sort of a family unit); Dany and her parents (could be quite dark); Lin Lin and her family; Emmanuel, Jenna and Flora.

EDIT: and the Insider family to finish it off (Fides in front, face obscured by something silly, with various Insider characters behind him/her).

MORE EDIT:
Pantheon theme: Each month has a different display of fictional and real pantheons of God/s. Lovecraft's pantheon, Christian, Hindu, Norse, Japanese, Celtic, Aztec, Egyptian, Shadowgirls Pantheon, Starkweather Pantheon, Native American, Sumerian, Warhammer Pantheon, Terry Prachet's Pantheon. (not sure about copyright for some of those).
And finally, the pantheon of great comic artists/creators such as Osamu Tezuka, Mike Mignola, Stan Lee, Joe Shuster, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (don't forget to include yoruselves).

Classic Movies Theme[b]: I likes the movie theme ideas, but how about something similar, yet different. The original Twelve Angry Men, Citizen Kane, stuff you might find on TCM from the 1950's.

[b]Comic Theme
: The characters made up like other comics/webcomic characters, perhaps ones to whom they have some similiarities. Jack Snow as Daredevil (lawyers), for example. Or perhaps Charon as Sluggy Freelance's Riff (since they both work with machines.

Anime Theme: Yeah, SOMEONE was going to mention it sooner or later. This could range from the good (Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist), the bad (Godannar) and the atrociously ugly (Air Gear). DBZ, Full Metal Panic...OOO! OOOOOOOOH! HAMTARO! Just imagine a shadow-hamster kicking some huge ManFishie's ass...yeeess.

MST3K Theme: If you REALLY wanted to be lazy, you could just take one panel from each of 12 select pages, and put in some silohuettes with added funny dialogue.

Shadowform theme: All sorts of fictional and non-fictional icons given a shadowform in their native setting. (guess you'd almost have to decide the characters separately).

Fairytale & Nursery Rhyme theme: Shadowgirls and Starkweather characters dressed up and set in well knowns such as Little Red Riding Hood, Hanzel and Grettle, Cinderella, Crooked Man, The Owl and the Pussycat (Solomon as the pussycat), Repunzel, Rumplestiltskin, Jack and Jill, The Three Pigs, Baa Baa Blacksheep (shadowform the sheep *lol*) The Pied piper, Jack and the beanstalk (What could Starky do with those magic beans?), the Gingerbread man, Goldilocks (Merv in a wig, faces 3 angry bears... Meep), Snow White, Puss in Boots (Solomon), Ugly Duckling and the Frog prince (would even he risk a kiss from Misty?).

Classic Cartoon Theme: Wherein our favorite characters mimic the antics of the greats of MGM and Warner Bros. animation. I totally see an Elmer Fudd/Bugs Bunny in the form of, respectively, Christmas and Charon.

"Neeehhh, what's up, bitch?"

Theme's Theme: (if that makes any sense)
A movie theme one month with Starky as Indiana, fighting the Master as Vader, Charon dressed as Trinity and Big Purple in a Gorilla suit playing King Kong, holding onto Dany while Becka dressed as Dorothy chases Solomon as Toto. (or something).
A Video Game theme another month with the Shadowchild as sonic fighting a DR. Robotnik Master, Jackson and Starky as the Mario Brothers, fighting Big Purple as Bowser, while LinLin tries to lift the massive sword of FFVII, as Chrissy pulls a Lara Croft to take the Spear of Destiny from Carty who sports a Halo getup and poor Merv just sits there wearing the Donky Kong tie (or something).

And no doubt many more. (although I could imagine this many characters, each having to be converted to the theme and each having something to do in the setting might be a bit taxing.)

I know it's very similar to one of the ideas thus far, but how about Movie Poster Homage: a reproduction of an iconic existing movie poster (i.e. the original Star Wars poster, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Pulp Fiction, Chinatown, Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, etc.) but with the Shadowgirls characters and amusingly-altered credits and titles... along the lines of Christmas' Baby (with Hydra tendrils curving up out of the ominous-looking pram) or Attack of the 50-Foot Mother (50-foot Charon with a foam-spilling beer tanker in one hand, standing astride Lucky's Bar and about to pluck an escaping Chrissy from amongst the burning cars on the ground, while Becka looks on from the top of a tank with severe embarassment).

Tarot Cards: portraits of each chosen character as an according card from the major arcana (and pop in Innsmouth lacations where they'd be useful - i.e. the lighthouse for The Tower).

For some reason I can't get the 50-Foot Charon out of my head... I need help ;)

HAA! I can see it now...

Not hard to imagine for me. My brother got a replica Buster Sword like Cloud's (thought not entirely to scale; it's shorter than a "real" one would be). It's frikkin' heavy, with most of the weight (of course) in the blade. I think it's...15 pounds?

For those of us who have moved on to the metric scale standard (kidding), I'd say that it's the weight of a normal is around 15 pounds. How is "puny" Cloud able to lift a 6.80388555+ kg blade and run at the same time? :P

Well, clearly, Cloud doesn't believe in the metric system.

Music Theme: Characters dressed to resemble musicians past and present. Even as far back as the time of Mozart. Like the High Priest as the Rolling Stones. For some reason I picture Charon done up like Steven Tyler. Maybe it's the hair...

Web Comics Theme: Starkweather and Shadowgirls characters dressed up for and/or set in various other web comics (could be a bit to get the various permissions). Examples include Earthsong (heck, they've even got two purple characters), domic deegan, Erfworld (possibly: Big P as Parson, Dany as Jillian, Charon as Wanda, Chrissy and the ISBs as Charlie's angels and Alex as Ansome), No Need for Bushido, flipside, Xylia and many more.
