VICTORY!

I have, under the handle Moczo, successfully uploaded a 50,065 word manuscript to the NaNoWriMo site. The story isn't technically finished yet, but all they care about it breeching the 50,000 mark, and I've done that.

And I find it funny that I was the second guy from the Shadowgirls forum to finish, yet I still finished after the 4th Guy. Because that's just the kind of sense of humor I have.

I am!

Genre: Fantasy
Rough Plot:

In a world where everything is preordained, the greatest power and the most peril lies with those whose names the oracles can't hear. They are The Unwritten, and only they can choose their destiny, thus shaping the world.

At sixteen, Cassandra has just discovered she is an Unwritten, probably in the worst possible manner, though there isn't a good one to find, really. She leaves home with her best friend (who, incidentally, is defying her own destiny), on the run from the Altarra, travels to distant lands, and learns how to live with free will. She eventually makes the choice to return and fix things.

Characters: Cassandra- our heroine.

Cassandra's parents- smart enough not to tell the priesthood they were having an Unwritten child, they fled the cities when Cassandra's mother was pregnant and made their home on a farm in the country.

Aileen- Cassandra's best friend. Found out at the same time Cassandra found out she was Unwritten that her future sucked, decided to leave it behind. Spunky girl sidekick.

Roland- Another Unwritten. Leads a group of bandits, mostly made up of those who found their destinies were to be thieves and vagrants.

The Altarra- hunter-priests of the Alta religion. They are known for their ferocity in tracking down and slaughtering the Unwritten. Considering most Unwritten are discovered as children, they are not nice people- it takes a very special kind of religious fanaticism to stick a sword in a toddler.

After last year's total failure, I'm trying again!

I don't have too much plot just yet. I requested some story elements from friends: random stuff for me to work with. Everyone who suggested something will be receiving my crazy rough draft on December 1st:

dectective story set in an odd setting (thanks drey!)
tattoos
a teenaged vampire who desperately wants to become a nun
a fire set under mysterious circumstances
rug-like thing with magical properties
(there will be at least one more thing from my writing buddy Connie)

Things I know:

The vampire girl, Isabella, is not the main character
The story will be set in modern day Oaxaca City, Mexico.
A lot of opening action will take place during Day of the Dead celebrations
there will be flashbacks to Oaxaca of the 1500s
insect spirits will be involved

I think public accountability will be good for me this year. Beyond having a few people expecting some sort of fiction in their email December 1st, I've organized a few open to the public write-ins and talked a couple local friends into joining so we can harrass one another about writing. My knitting group is also aware that I may be writing sometimes during our get togethers.

I'm stuck for mid-plot twists, and my wife isn't helping like she promised she would for the last 3 years, but....

Genre: Detective/Fantasy

Plot: PI [female name] finds out the old gods aren't dead, jsut hiding, when she inherits the mantle of the god Loki. Now she needs to master her new found powers, and solve a murder, before she becomes the killer's next target.

Characters:

unnamed female detective: main protagonist, she currently is the living incarnation of the God Loki.

Thor: A sanitation engineer with a 3,000 year old grudge.

The Queen of Air and Darkness: An immortal student, and Loki's sometimes guide among the gods.

One or two other gods to give a fuller version of the pantheons, and maybe a few of the other trickster gods for sequel tie ins.

It's day 3 and I'm still on target. ;-)

I'm about to say something crazy... I'm writing tonight instead of knitting!

I was going to... I was all excited and everything, but unless I plan on doing it all this weekend, it's not going to happen. It was going to be a story of a girl told through several short stories. Even had about 10 of them planned.

Damnit.

Write anyway!

I haven't written a word in a week (my trip to Florida was too actionpacked to fit in much writing) but I hope to write more this weekend. Don't worry about the word count, just get some words on paper/computer/whatever. :)
