Yeah, I'm saving my Carlsberg for tomorrow night. BIG party. Expect some strange posts if I make it back.

(Yes I know Carlsberg is a Danish beer not an Aussie one, but it's my heavies and the Aussie Cascades are my lights. Although I should be a XXXX lover since I'm in Queensland)

Most americans would inquire after Fosters, but I had a friend from Perth explain that Foster's is the crap that's so bad it has to be exported. then, in that wonderful accent, she goes "Foster's, it's Austrailian for Piss."

Gotta love girl scouts.

When I lived in the Solomon Islands I can remember the Fosters and XXXX brands where fighting hard over there to be the top beer.

The best add I ever saw was of a horse drinking out of a bucket marked XXXX and pissing into a bucket markes Fosters.

Only in the solomons.

I live in Oregon, the unofficial US capitol of Microbrews and brewpubs So I've never touched Fosters more than once. & I haven't touched a US Macrobrew more than once in one night(Coors, Bud at the bar) in 6 years
I am here therefore I am, now where did the Rum go?

That's one benefit from living in England - Real Ale. Just find yourself a real ale pub and sod whatever's on tap at all your run of the mill boozers... here's to beer that is a) strong, b) has genuine flavour and c) doesn't taste like carbonated horse piss (ie. 95% of all lager available here). Here's to real beer (and 14% cider that has you falling over in the street after three pints) the world over! Mine's a pint of Hobgoblin!

Got to say, though, last time I was in the US I developed a taste for Drop Top Amber Ale... I never would have thought I'd find a real-ale flavour on tap in Seattle... I guess microbreweries are the brands to watch, huh? I'll do some liquid research next time I go over :)

The North West US is the place to do the searching. In Portland you can find Multiple brew pubs & some breweries with restaurants some where you can peer into the Brewing room and the bartenders are also the Brewing masters.

I love Hobgoblin. Thing is, I've only had it as an import and wonder if it's terribly different than what's on tap in the UK.

It's pretty much the same, either bottled or drought. Most real ales travel really well, so they don't change much between tap or bottle (I do avoid them in cans, though, but that's probably more to do with me being odd about them). If you find yourself a Real Ale pub, it's pretty much exactly what you'll find on tap... masses of beers with odd and quirky names that have mystical things like "flavour" and "subtlety" and "depth." Some of the vintage pressed ciders you find are worth a try too (though they tend to be reeeeeally strong, so a couple of pints and you start to get a wobble on. Most ordinary pubs in England have very typical and commercial largers (though some of the continental white/blonde beers are creeping in - Hoegaarden is a particular favorite of mine, if you don't mind your beer light, ultra refreshing and tasting a bit like someone tossed a bag of herbs in it, plus it comes in the biggest glasses in Christendom) that are definately closer to horse-piss-territory. You find a real ale pub though, and you'll find the best beer our grey little island has to offer.
