Shameless Plug

Postby spring on Mon Jul 06, 2009 7:01 am

***This is a repeat of an email some of you have already seen. LOL***

Hi, everyone.

Allow me a moment brag about my family.

My aunt has written a children's story which has been illustrated by my mom. It's a modern fable called Nicio and Cedar Fire. It's made extra cool by being inspired by true events. Nicio is my uncle.

The Amazon link is below. If you feel so inclined, please check it out. If you'd rather see a copy in person, I'll have one in my hands in a few weeks. :)

http://www.amazon.com/Nicio-Cedar-Fire- ... 220&sr=8-1

Happy reading!

Today's shameless plug is for my friend Jason and his online t-shirt sale of doom!

He is having a sale over on his site Nerd Rockstar. All tees are $6.66 with totally free shipping.

In addition to getting some cool shirts on the cheap, each purchase counts as an entry to win a PS3 as well as helps fund a nerdcore event of some sort with Schaffer the Darklord and Scrub Club Records.

You don't care but I'm telling you anyway.

The Social Knitworking podcast is live! http://socialknitworking.org

It's an hour of me and my friends talking about nerdy stuff and nerdy knits. The detailed show notes will be up tomorrow if you are interested but would rather skip around to certain parts. I'm particularly fond of the Stick It In Your Queue part that starts around the 33:30 mark (movie clipsand commentary at 43:10).

Also we have a contest to win a knitted doodad. Call us, record a bumper and get a prize - that's it!

It's you and me against Them, Jacobus - you and me. And for the rest of you, no, we're not talking about giant ants.

Here's the detailed list of podcast notes I promised: http://bit.ly/GmOm0. I'm still recovering from watching Mazes & Monsters. LOL

By the way, you do not have to be a knitter to record a bumper for us. It's fun! You can get momentarily internet famous! (or not)

An earlier shameless plug was for my friend Jason's t-shirt sale. Well, today I'm talking about the event that sale helped fund:

Pensacola is certainly no stranger to occupation. Indeed, the "City of Five Flags" moniker that accompanies the city name is symbolic of the number of sovereign groups that have laid claim to the port city. But in early November, a new force plans a campaign of occupation for the city... And they won't use guns or political tactics; they come armed with algorithms, video games, and microphones. Pensacola is being invaded by nerds! NERD INVASION is coming to the Pensacola Silver Screen Theaters on November 6th!

NERD INVASION is an all-night nerd music and gaming extravaganza running from 7pm on Friday, November 6th to Noon on Saturday, November 7th.

Nerd Invasion highlights:

The Top of the game in Nerdcore music from all across the country
-Schaffer the Darklord (Queens, NY)
-Dual Core (Cincinnati, Ohio)
-Zealous1 (Oceanside, CA)
-Dr. Awkward (San Diego, CA)
-Kabuto the Python (San Francisco, CA)
-MadHatter (Salina, KS)
-Chester (Wichita, KS)
-Benjamin Bear (Orlando, FL)
-Krondor Krew (Orlando/Tampa, FL)
-Marc with a C (Orlando, FL)
-Shael Riley (Brooklyn, New York)

All-night gaming in many formats
-Card games (Magic the Gathering, Versus System, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.)
-Video games (Retro and current generations)
-Board games (All of your favorites, plus demos of new systems)
-Role playing games (Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire, Mage, LARP, etc.)
*With thousands of dollars in prizes to be given away by our sponsors Wizards of the Coast and White Wolf Publishing.

-Open mic lounge

Plus much, much more dorkiness.

This is not an event to miss! Come on out and get your geek on. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For more information, please visit http://www.NerdInvasion.com

Are you ready for the Invasion?

***Nerd Invasion is brought to you by a collaboration between independent nerd clothier Nerd Rockstar (NerdRockstar.com - Pensacola, FL) and Nerdcore music label extraordinaire Scrub Club Records (ScrubClubRecords.com - Wichita, KS)

Can you guess where I'm going to be the first weekend of November? It's going to be awesome on an EPIC scale.

In the words of Milhouse VanHouten in a more mediocre episode of the Simpsons: "I'm not a NERD! Nerds are smart."

Nerd Music, huh? Never heard of it. But if it's what I think it is, it may well be a bunch of pop culture references tying into an occassional deeper message or story. Gotta be more listenable (at least to my ears) than Christian rock, though. And I'm Catholic!

Most polkas are more listenable than Christian Rock.

Honestly, I've always found the whole concept of Christian Rock... weird. I mean, do you ever hear of Buddhist Rock? Or Jewish Rock? Well, maybe- there's Orthodox Jewish rappers... :\

Christian Rock makes a whole lot of sense to me. Of all the faiths, Christianity has a long history of playing music during their ceremony as well as to celebrate the faith. As musical styles grew and changed, there have been new songs and pieces written to celebrate Christianity. Why should rock be any different?

Sure, some of it may have been written purely to draw in youth to the Christian faith. That sort of sucks and it pretty much guarantees their music will suck. But others I think are just faithful Christians who like to rock out and include their faith in their music.

I'm not a Christian, however my ex is, so I went to a variety of Sunday services with him. The churches with music more modern and rockin' were far more entertaining than ones playing the dirgelike hymns of old.

I've admittedly had my issues with some, not necessarily the issues you guys have, and going into most of them violates our ban on religion. BUT...

If you want to actually hear GOOD christian rock I'd advise seeking out any Petra from before 1992. Other than that it gets to tastes, and other points, but just about everyone who likes rock likes Petra.

Today's Shameless Plug is for a show in NYC

A coworker asked what I was doing over Halloween weekend.

Beside the requisite costume party, I said "Oh, and I'm seeing three short plays about monsters."

Her reaction was to laugh and say "Of course you'd do something like that."

I've decided to take that as a compliment and move on.

Today we have a series of post-Nerd Invasion shameless plugs:

omgomgomgomg! I had a super fabulous weekend at Nerd Invasion.

Special shout outs to:

THE HOSTS: there were two main dudes at the heart of the show
Mad Hatter is the head dude at Scrub Club Records. He rocks! And if you click the music link on the site, you get to download a crazy amount of free music.
Nerd Rockstar is Jason of the fabulous t-shirts, patches, and more. He's a crazy cool dude & was kind enough to give me a 6:30am ride to the airport. :)

THE MUSCIANS: there were a lot of performances but I had some favorites
Doc Awkward is The Man. His Next Gen ep is brilliant. Go to the Scrub Club site I already linked (Mad Hatter) and download it now.
Bloodclan is the collaborative project of MC Loki and MC Diabeats. These guys are brilliant with white wolf world of darkness inspired rap. Oh, and live, it's sexy as all get out. Check it out here - Amor Sanguinis.
Dual Core - Int Eighty of Dual Core did a set that ROCKED. He's also super sweet, funny as hell, and I got to be in the video for the track Forever off the Next Level cd. I've been playing the whole Next Level cd on repeat all day.
Schaffer the Darklord If I was in highschool and had a locker, the inside would be plastered with pictures of Schaffer with heart stickers and TLF love notes. Yeah, he's my fantasy rockstar boyfriend. ;-) He also puts on one hell of a high energy, funny, rockin' show.

I keep getting those not really from drod, drod emails saying he misses me and wants me to post on the forum. The drod bot is very sweet. ;)

So here I am shameless plugging myself.

I'm reworking my long dusty writing blog into an "everything I create" blog. Recent posts include: a recently knitted hat, waiting for the train haiku, and an excerpt from vampire fiction. (Oh dear god, why am I writing vampire fiction? LOL)
