first of all I'd like to say hi, i just started reading the comic and i love it, i've been a long time Lovecraft/Mythos fan so I like most stories involved with it(with the exception of stephen king).
now i'm just curious, how closely is shadowgirls supposed to follow the Cthulhu Mythos? for example, are Hydra and Dagon(im only assuming Dagon is going to show up eventually) the only great old ones in this story universe or is there the entire "pantheon"- for lack of a better term- of great old ones and elder gods? Mostly i was wondering about the possibility of the character Starkweather being somehow connected to the great old one Cthugha(seeing as starkweather seems to exercise some control over fire.) I was also thinking about there possibly being other cults(Nyarlathotep, Yig, Shub Niggurath, ect) would they share any connection with the Esoteric Order of Dagon? are they in competition with one another? are they also after the avatar of Nodens?
just some random thoughts i felt like throwing out there...

Hi, Jormungaund-
Welcome to Shadowgirls! I'm glad you have enjoyed it thus far and I can try and answer some of these without spoilers.
Shadowgirls uses quite a bit of the Mythos and that means that any of the Great Old Ones and Elder Gods are fair game. However, Starkweathers origins have been established separately as coming from a different Divine Source. This is actually information that is broken down in the upcoming RPG setting and Starkweather and Becka/Charon are not that different it is just that their power is channeled from a different source.
And I think it is safe to assume that if there are different "Gods" (and not just Lovecraftian) they will each have their set of earthbound followers. Who they are, how powerful they are and how that affects our Shadowgirls will hopefully be answered in the coming months.
There is one more important faction to introduce into our Mythmakers world that helps tie all this together.
Thanks again! _________________ David A. Rodriguez

The details outlaid by Lovecraft and even his circle of writers tend to be very sparse in concern to most of the pantheon. Not only do the writers sometimes contradict each other, but Lovecraft is even accused of contradicting himself in some stories. This is explained by the fact that the Lovecraft Pantheon is one of Alien gods and that any attempt by humanity to try and order, organize, categorize or rationalize them is simply impossible. It's impossible for us to comprehend an earthly god, let alone an alien one.
This leaves the Daves, a lot of room to both follow and break the rules of the lovecraft universe. They could even break their own rules at a later date and simply have the gods use this same exsuse that their methods are beyond human comprehension (but I'm doubtful of that).
At the same time, the lack of depth and definement to the universe, allows them to expand upon it and even incorporate it into other fictional or non-fictional mythologies. Starkweather witches certainly appear to incorporate Christian mythology and Alex Starkweather appears to have another power that we're yet to fully understand (There's also the three spinsters). Other than that, we've had hints that Shadowgirls could delve into some Native American mythology in the next season, or that there may be some of that mythology linked to the origin of the Shadowgirls. Plus there's the celtic links, although that could just be Noden's own celtic links (or Nuada as he's known in Ireland).
The main links I've followed for the new faction that the Dave's have yet to introduce officially has been that of Judaisim, which of couse is a precursor to Christianity but may also have some vague Lovecraft links. I'm chasing the story of Gog and Magog together with Mordecai's name meaning "servent of Marduk" and another link on Baruch ben Neriah to Zoroaster (who he is sometimes equated as). _________________ Always spread Vegimite behind your ears to prevent attack by drop bears.

i also note that Mother Hydra has an army of progenitors and offspring(which seem to be analogous to the deep ones) at her beck and call, I'm anxious to see is The Shadowchild/Nodens will ever call the nightgaunts to her aid... or if the deep ones have the ability to awaken the Shoggoths as they do in Lovecrafts mythos.

FWIW, IIRC it doesn't take much to wake up shoggoths - just get anywhere near them and make some noise.

what i meant was are the deep ones still threatening to alert the shoggoths to man-kinds existence if humans become too openly hostile to the deep ones

this is a very fascinating story and it appears as if I am going to have to check out starkweather as well...sigh. But I do like it when there is a ton of thought put into the story line and reasons behind even the seemingly small stuff. _________________

I don't think anyone has ever gotten any spoilers out of D-Rod _________________ D-Rod's evil-ways outstretch the ingenuity of Dr. Von Doom. In fact he should have a picture of D-Rod's face as his avatar.

Welcome,Jormungaund.Y'know,I've been wondering if any other cults would be integrated into the story too. However it'd be more entertaining if it was other non-humans like the Shan,or the Great Race Of Yith. _________________ The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind. -H.P. Lovecraft
